I wrote in my book, A Skier’s Journal, that “skiing’s typical portrayal as an outdoor adventure activity conceals that skiing at a resort is a more sterile, corporate, amusement-park-like activity than skiers tend to admit.” The similarities between amusement parks and ski resorts were unmistakable after replacing a weekend of skiing last month with a week at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. For example, they both require paying large sums of money for the privilege of waiting in lines for relatively safe, thrilling experiences.
